John Muir was an influential Scottish-American naturalist, inventor, explorer, writer, and an advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States.

Through his writings, he has inspired millions of readers, including presidents and congressmen, to take action to help preserve and restore the natural environment.

Born on April 21, 1838, in Dunbar, Scotland, Muir had a strict religious upbringing and began his “love affair” with nature while still young. His family immigrated to the United States in 1849 and started a farm near Portage, Wisconsin, which has since been designated a National Historic Landmark.

In 1876, through articles published in popular periodicals, Muir encouraged the federal government to adopt a forest conservation. He is also remembered for his role in the establishment of Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks, founding the Sierra Club, and many other achievements.

More than a century since his passing, Muir still continues to inspire people to explore and conserve the outdoors. Below are some great John Muir quotes that will make you appreciate the beauty of nature and the importance of protecting it.
