10 Best Motivational Business Books for Entrepreneurs

Our latest collection of motivational books for entrepreneurs to help you become successful.

If you’re an entrepreneur, you know what this article is really about.  It’s about “what 10 books should I have on my bookshelf.”  It can’t possibly be about “what 10 books I need to read” because no entrepreneur has time to read ten books!

That being said, if these books are never taken off the shelf, they will never do you and your business any good.  So, to help you get the most from the wisdom contained in these volumes, we’ve broken them down into four categories and provided our tips for getting the most out each one.

Inspirational Business Books for Entrepreneurs

Category 1: Read it Cover to Cover, Right Now

There are a few books that every entrepreneur, especially if leading a technology startup, needs to read.  If you haven’t read these three books, don’t let another week go by without getting and consuming them.  They are all easy to read and provide a framework for thinking about your business that will set you on the best path for success.

1. The Lean Startup by Eric Reis

Over the past ten years, the entire approach to launching a startup has been redefined by the Lean Startup methodology.  This book helps entrepreneurs understand why managing a startup is different from managing a small version of big business and explains how to approach launching a new venture scientifically, rather than the traditional approach of betting-the-farm on a collection of untested hypotheses.  Save yourself months of frustration and wasted money by reading this book before even thinking about your next startup.

2. Inside the Tornado by Geoffrey Moore

(not to be confused with Jeffrey I. Moore, founder on Everyday Power Blog)
Via his earlier book, Crossing the Chasm, Moore had popularized the diffusions of innovation theory.  This follow-up book provides an even better introduction and provides very helpful advice both on how to “cross the chasm” and how to survive “the tornado” – scaling as technology products move into the mainstream.  For any entrepreneur that is introducing real technology innovation, these concepts are critical to survival.

3. From Concept to Scale by Steve Graves, Dave Blanchard, and Josh Kwan

While The Lean Startup provides a conceptual overview of how to launch a startup in modern times, this book provides a detailed framework for how to do it.  It helps entrepreneurs intentionally (rather than accidentally) progress through four stages (concept, launch, prove, scale) of building a business effectively using the six elements (language, offering, model, structure, path, people) essential to any organization.

Category 2: Read it Cover to Cover, Sometime

Like the books in the first category, these books are chock full of guidance and frameworks that will help position your startup for success.   However, each of these books deals with a specific aspect of the startup journey, so you can set these aside for a long flight or a sleepless night at the right phase of your company’s development.

4. Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath

This book is an easy-to-read guide on how to craft messages that people will remember.  When you’re ready to start telling your story, and how your new venture is going to change the world, set aside some time to learn these critical lessons.

10 Best Motivational Business Books for Entrepreneurs

5. Competing for the Future by Gary Hamel and C.K. Prahalad

Unlike every other book in this list, the authors are heavy academics and this book is not written just for startups.  But at some point, and probably before too long, it will be essential to think beyond your first product and set a clear course for the future.  This book makes the strong case that you have to see the future in order to shape the future, and that the capabilities you build today will enable or constrain what future you can achieve.

Category 3: Read Some of It, At the Right Time

Realistically, not every book needs to be read cover to cover in order to get the full benefit.  We believe that these two books are incredibly helpful to entrepreneurs, but can be picked up and picked through at just the right time.

6. Business Model Generation by Alexander Osterwalder& Yves Pigneur

One of the best tools for implementing the Lean Startup methodology is the Business Model Canvas (BMC).  This book is the definitive source on how to develop a one-page model of your business (and iterate until you’ve nailed it) before (or instead of) spending months writing a full business plan.  This book is very graphical and hands-on.  Read Section 1 (Canvas) early in your venture, skim Section 2 (Patterns) to get ideas for how it works in action, and then use the rest of the book as a go-to reference tool as you try to make it work for your business.

10 Best Motivational Business Books for Entrepreneurs

7. Focus by Al Ries

Another book not specifically targeted at startups, Focus does a great job of explaining why intense focus is advantageous for the success of any business. For startups that kind of focus is essential.  We recommend reading the last chapter first (Fifteen Keys to a Long-Term Focus) and then going back and referencing some of the other 14 chapters as you have specific needs or want to dive deeper.

Category 4: Read Some of It, All the Time

Finally, there are a few authors that seem to truly understand the entrepreneur’s reality.  These three books don’t require long stretches of attention to reap the rewards.  They are broken into bite-sized pieces that can be quickly enjoyed when you just have a few minutes to spare.  The inspirational jolt they provide is better than any caffeinated beverage to carry you through a tedious meeting or lift you out of the doldrums.

8. do more faster by David Cohen and Brad Feld

David and Brad are two of the founders of TechStars, one of the leading technology startup accelerators.  This large collection of short anecdotes from entrepreneurs, mentors, and investors provides helpful insights and lessons on how to succeed (or fail) at launching a startup. “Chapters” are one to three page stories from people like you, who have wrestled with challenges like yours, and have lessons we all can learn from, usually with a brief commentary by Brad or David to help make the lessons more broadly applicable.

9. Rules for Revolutionaries by Guy Kawasaki

Guy is an entertaining and inspiring communicator.  While chapters are about 20 pages long, each one is broken into many sections, typically a page or less, making it easy to pick up and set down this book at your convenience.  While the book is full of practical lessons from the author’s experiences introducing revolutionary products, as much as anything, reading this book helps entrepreneurs understand why we’re different and encourages us to act like the revolutionaries we are.

10 Best Motivational Business Books for Entrepreneurs

10. Integrity Moments by Rick Boxx

While all of the above books focus on the mechanics of building a successful business, this collection of 90 short vignettes challenges the reader to build a business based on integrity and focused on eternal impact.  Each chapter is less than 2 pages long and includes questions for reflecting on how to apply the lesson learned to your life and business.

7 Signs of Narcissistic Abuse from Your Partner

Learn to spot the signs of narcissistic abuse before it takes full control of you.

No doubt you’ve heard about narcissism or Narcissistic Personality Disorder. It is considered a long-standing personality pattern, difficult to change—mostly because persons with those traits don’t believe they have a problem.

The most obvious signs of the disorder include a grandiose sense of self-importance, difficulty empathizing with others, a high need for flattery, jealousy, and a sense of entitlement.

But how do those qualities translate into abuse? What toxic relationship dynamics show up with a narcissist that may not show up when one’s partner is NOT narcissistic, but simply insecure or likes to be the center of attention?

Are you in a relationship with a narcissist? Are you a victim of a narcissistic partner? Watch out for this signs before it’s too late.

Here are some signs of narcissistic abuse:

1) A narcissist tries to shrink your world.

Narcissists are jealous and possessive. They have a need to control your life. Do you enjoy visiting your parents or siblings or just chatting with them on the phone? Do you like to go out with friends? Do you have a gym membership?

Narcissists will accuse you of ignoring them or your children. They will say you are putting others (or yourself) ahead of them, and that your priorities are all wrong.

To avoid an argument, you may automatically turn down invitations from others or speak to friends at limited (even secretive) times. You will limit your hobbies.

Soon your world shrinks. Then when you decide to go out with friends anyway for a special occasion, it will be taken as proof of your lack of regard for your partner.

Your choice is always to defend your rights and get into arguments or limit your involvement with others. A lose-lose.

And by the way, when you cancel your plans with friends to prove to your partner he/she is always your priority, don’t expect him/her to shower you with attention all evening. He/She will likely ignore you. If you complain about being ignored after you gave up a night out, well, that brings us to the second point of narcissistic abuse:

2) A narcissist never accepts blame.

It is always someone else’s (your) fault. The rule is simple: if you do something they dislike, you are to blame; if they do something you dislike, you are to blame for making them do it. Narcissists always have excuses for their bad behavior, whereas your bad behavior is inexcusable.

Many times, narcissists won’t even admit that their hurtful or manipulative behavior is wrong. You will be accused of being too sensitive, or you take things too personally.

But in fact, narcissists take every slight – however small – very personally. This brings us to the third point of narcissistic abuse:

3) Narcissists project all of their unfavorable qualities onto others.

They are not controlling, but you are controlling. They are never selfish or demanding, but you are. They will accuse you of lying or being secretive, when in fact they keep you in the dark about many things.

Sadly, when one is in a relationship with narcissistic abuse, the weary partner often will go behind the narcissist’s back do something they have a right to do (spend their money, visit a friend, and so forth)—just to avoid an argument. But when that secrecy is discovered, the narcissist now has more “proof” that the partner cannot be trusted, which results in even greater efforts to control their partner.

The bottom line is you can’t win with a narcissist. Which bring us to point number four:

4) Narcissists use double-standards—and they make up rules to suit their needs.

You can’t easily win an argument with a narcissist because they will NOT admit they are wrong.

So when you accuse them of having double-standards, they will always have an excuse or find a way to make you feel stupid. Their strong sense of entitlement means that rules don’t apply to them. But since they must exercise control over you, then the rules must always apply to you.

If by chance you catch them red-handed doing something you would NEVER be allowed to do, they will still make you the focus of their contempt.

There are many ways they do this. They may admit what they are doing BUT accuse you of having done it many more times. They may say you have no right to accuse them of anything, given all they have to put up with in your relationship. They may accuse you of being unforgiving or intolerant. If you bring up the incident later, they will accuse you of holding grudges.

To make it more confusing, the rules will change on a moment’s notice. Thus, you will be guilty as charged whenever it works to their advantage to make you wrong. You then start losing perspective on who is right and who is wrong; which brings us to:

5) You think you are going crazy.

Narcissists want to keep you off-balance. They want you to doubt yourself, not them. They want you to doubt your perceptions and feelings. This is one reason victims remain in an abusive relationship. They begin to believe they are seriously flawed, that others may not want them, and that the abuser is right to find fault.

Keep in mind that narcissists rarely end up with other narcissists. Instead, they find people who are willing to look inward at their own flaws rather than blame others, who try hard to be extra-fair and cooperative, who are willing to give more than they get. It is such people they can manipulate more readily.

And when the relationship leads to children or owning property together, leaving that relationship becomes even more difficult for the one being abused. This brings up to point number six:

6) If you reject a narcissist, they will seek revenge.

In psychology, it is called “narcissistic injury”: when a narcissist feels hurt, challenged, wronged, or made to look stupid. That is NOT tolerable to a person who has a grandiose sense of importance. They must get even or have the final word.

On a mild level, it can take the form of angry texts or condemning you to others. (It is true that when a narcissist can no longer control you, he will try to control what others think of you.) In more serious cases, a narcissist may try to use the children as pawns against you, or punish you financially.

The narcissist may contact you even a year after a relationship break-up. This brings us to the final point of narcissistic abuse:

7) A narcissist will reject you just so he can pull you back in and then reject you yet again.

In one example, a narcissist ended a relationship with a woman. He told her he never wanted to hear from her again. A few days later, she received a text from him. He just wanted to say hello and hoped she was doing fine. She took it as a sign they might reunite.

They agreed to meet for dinner and ended up spending the night together. The next day, he was cold and rejected and humiliated her for even thinking he might want her back.

~

There are degrees of narcissistic abuse. In milder forms, it may be a bit easier to put up with. But it is always a challenge. The best advice: be wary of being in a relationship with a narcissist.

7 Mind Blowing Questions to Make You Rethink Life

Discover some mind blowing questions that will make you rethink who you are and where you are going.

When I was in fifth grade, the teacher asked the class, “what is the largest number?”. We each grabbed a pencil and a piece of paper and toiled away at our best guess.

One by one we raced to the teacher’s desk and showed her various numbers with long strings of zeroes or nines and one by one we returned to our desks puzzled as to what that elusive number might be.

Finally, the teacher asked “what is your number plus one? Or plus two? Or plus one hundred?”. And at that moment, I grasped the concept of infinity. It was mind-blowing to a ten year old. Mathematics would never be the same again.

That is what happens when intriguing, mind-blowing questions get asked. They often lead to mind-blowing answers that forever change how you view things.

Below are seven mind-blowing questions that might make you rethink your life if you take the time to give a thoughtful answer. Keep in mind that while the questions themselves might seem fairly ordinary at first glance, it is what you do with the questions that can potentially have a life-changing impact.

Mind Blowing Question #1: Where do your thoughts originate?

If you said “my brain” think again. It may NOT be that simple.

Science has yet to explain how physical materials—brain cells and neurotransmitters—bring about the non-physical result we call “thought.” Plus, how do we explain phenomena such as telepathy or premonitions, where minds communicate with one another when there is NO physical connection to allow it? Some experts postulate that consciousness exists outside the brain and the brain operates more as a filter.

In other words, our minds are not “local” to our brain but “non-local.” We simply download it from a place outside of ourselves. If you believe that your spirit lives on after your body dies, you are acknowledging that your consciousness does not originate in your brain.

Many writers of songs or books cannot fully explain how they created a certain melody or beautiful turn-of-the-phrase. “It just came to me!” they would say. If you consider the idea that your thoughts can be coming from a source outside of you, does that inspire you or frighten you?

Mind Blowing Question #2: If you lost everything that was important to you—money, relationships, health, etc.—what could sustain you?

If you live long enough or love hard enough, you will eventually lose something or someone that means the world to you. Then what? How strongly do you embrace such things as faith, hope, gratitude, beauty, and love in order to still discover a meaningful life after a great loss?

Believe it or not, cultivating such virtues now can give you strength in times of great need.

Mind Blowing Question #3: Where in your life do you have peace of mind?

The less at peace you are, the more stressed and unhappy you will be. The mistake people make is assuming that peace of mind can only occur when all is well, when one’s troubles are resolved and the future is completely bright. But how often does that happen?

When you can learn to accept things you cannot change, to follow the light instead of the shadow, to find the beauty within the ugly, to discover the hope within the despair, and trust in the belief that you always have the capacity to change your life and the lives of others for the better, inner peace will blossom.

Mind Blowing Question #4: What if you believed that you exist for a Divine purpose?

Even if you don’t believe that at all, what if you believed that? What difference might that make in your actions, your attitudes, and your choices? And if you answer these mind-blowing questions, what does that tell you about the course your life is on right now?

The search for that purpose may be unknown to you. If so, examine your passions—that which truly excites and fulfills you—for your Divine purpose may have something to do with those yearnings. Notice when “random” events or “coincidences” occurred that pointed you in directions you might not otherwise have taken. Those are clues to your Divine purpose.

Mind Blowing Question #5: What do you wish people understood about you that they don’t (fully) understand now?

The answer to this question might reveal why you have problems in certain relationships or why you feel lonely or misunderstood. It might be a clue that you haven’t made it clear to others what you need them to understand. It might indicate something about yourself that you are afraid of revealing.

It might even be an aspect of yourself that even YOU don’t fully understand or appreciate. If others did understand that aspect of who you are, then what difference might it make in your relationships, happiness, goals, or your sense of fulfillment?

Mind Blowing Question #6: What if you were more aware that every thought, feeling, or action of yours has a definite and timeless ripple-effect?

The truth is your thoughts and deeds DO have a ripple effect.

If you took that into consideration, much more than you now do, how would that change your decisions and actions? If you believed that even simple actions, such as how you treat the cashier at your favorite coffee shop, would in turn have a ripple effect that affected dozens of other people—loved ones and strangers—what effect would you want that to be?

In every interaction you make, YOU have the power to open another person’s spirit or close it. Be mindful.

Mind Blowing Question #7: Can you peacefully co-exist with uncertainty?

If you can’t relax unless you know what an outcome will be before it happens; if you can’t make positive steps forward without knowing what you will find around the corner; if you must always have fallback plans to ensure that nothing can go wrong – then you will rarely have calm moments.

You might also be unknowingly driving people around you crazy. Uncertainty is a huge part of our everyday life and impossible to eradicate.

If you examine the most important things that happened in your life—good and bad—you will realize that they were unexpected and unplanned. You may be happily married but the day before you met your spouse you may never have known they existed.

The same is true with your best friends. Who your parents were, where you grew up, who your teachers were—meeting them were all unplanned by you. When you can embrace uncertainty as a friend and not fear it, you can quiet your mind and have access to inner guidance or insights you wouldn’t otherwise have noticed when your mind is full of chatter and scary “what if?” thoughts.

If any of these mind blowing questions made you rethink who you are and where you are going, then you are on track to make some truly amazing changes in your life. So the next question is: “what’s your next step?

How Fake News Can Make You a Better Person

Discover how fake news can actually improve you.

“I would never, ever date a liberal” one client told me after the 2016 national election. Later that day, a woman came to me very troubled that her husband of 30 years voted the Republican ticket. She wondered aloud, “Is it possible I married a bigot and never knew?”

Since then, a week doesn’t go by before some of my clients raise the issue of politics in their therapy sessions—in a manner that reveals disdain for those with differing political views and fear for the future of our country.

One of the ingredients of this deepening divide is the phenomenon we now call “fake news.” Fake news runs the gamut from news that is patently false by any reasonable standard, to news that is accurate in its facts but still biased or incomplete.

Fake news is news with an agenda that goes beyond the facts and tries to persuade the consumer to draw a pre-determined conclusion.

The Problem with Fake News

The problem with much of the information – and misinformation – coming our way is that reasonable people disagree about what news is actually fake.

Fake News Can Make You a Better Person

Even when people agree that some news is clearly biased, they may not care when the bias reflects their own beliefs. It is only when the bias goes against one’s cherished beliefs that fake news is considered a blight on journalistic integrity and an obstacle to those seeking truth.

A well-respected survey called “The American National Election Studies” examines American’s political opinions. They found that 30 years ago, people’s feelings toward those in the opposite political party were NOT that different from how they felt about those in their own party.

Not so today. People nowadays are more polarized than ever before. There are fewer people who simply “respectfully disagree” and more people who demonize those with differing views.

But herein lies an opportunity for personal growth—and perhaps for reversing the ill-will that has cast a shadow over our country. One of the ways we grow spiritually (or psychologically) is to identify our blind spots and endeavor to improve our vision of who we really are and how we conduct ourselves. That takes courage and humility.

What we learn about ourselves is often not very flattering.

Fake News Can Make You a Better Person

A good number of people, most of the time—and without fully realizing it—tend to do the following:

  • They search for information that supports their pre-existing beliefs and overlook, or become suspicious, of information that challenges firmly-held beliefs.
  • They have a hard time admitting they are wrong when it involves cherished beliefs.
  • They will make excuses for the bad behavior of people they identify with, while criticizing that same behavior in those they oppose.
  • They will feel some sort of satisfaction when those they deeply disagree with are ridiculed; but become defensive and angry when those they identify with are ridiculed.
  • When any of the above are pointed out during a heated debate, they will deny what they are doing, or will justify it in some way.
  • They will read the above points and nod their head in agreement that the average person is guilty of such things—but that they themselves are more objective than the average person.

But there is hope.

How Fake News Can Make You a Better Person

Fake News Can Make You a Better Person

Hope lies with your willingness to do three things: admit your own bias, strive to be fairer, and treat those you disagree with in a manner you would like to be treated. The following suggestions can help:

1.) In any news story or political debate, strive to see some merit (even if it is a small amount) in what is being conveyed.

2.) If you are in a debate, instead of arguing facts, try to understand the deeper reasons why the other person feels the way they do.

Often, there is a personal story that underlies a belief system. It is more than “principled logic” that leads one to believe the things they do. Hearing their story may allow you to at least say “Now I understand.

3.) Ask yourself, “What will I lose if I alter some of my beliefs?

Is it the need to be right? Is it loyalty to a group? Is it future safety or comfort? Sometimes, we hold stubbornly to beliefs because we are attached to a fear or a need. Can those fears or needs be addressed in ways other than clinging to a certain set of beliefs?

4.) If you find yourself labeling those you disagree with in pejorative terms, apply those same pejoratives to yourself and see if there is any accuracy.

For example: if you say to another, “You are a hypocrite (or lacking compassion, or selfish…)!” ask yourself “Am I ever hypocritical?” If the answer is “yes”, then take steps to improve those traits in yourself. We often see in others aspects of ourselves we wish to hide.

5.) Stop contributing to no-win debates on social media if it only serves to inflame rather than enlighten.

6.) Pray or meditate for a greater ability to recognize your own weaknesses, correct them, and be a healing presence to others.

70 C. S. Lewis Quotes About Love, God, & Life

Looking for inspirational C. S. Lewis quotes that will inspire and motivate you?

C.S. Lewis was a prolific Irish scholar, novelist, and author of more than 30 books. He is best known for his ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ fantasy series, which have been adapted into various films.

Arguably the most influential writer of his time, C.S. Lewis is known for his vast works, which continue to attract thousands of new readers every year.

C.S. Lewis was born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast, Ireland, and he went on to teach at Oxford University. He died on November 22, 1963, in Oxford, England.

Lewis was a pro-Christian writer who used his works to support his faith. His words can teach us about love, God, and life.

In that respect, here are some of the best and most powerful C.S. Lewis quotes to inspire you.

Of any whose story, song or art
Delights us, our sincerest praise
Means, when all’s said, ‘You break my heart?”” – C. S. Lewis

7.) “What draws people to be friends is that they see the same truth. They share it.” – C. S. Lewis

C.S Lewis Quotes on Love and Life

8.) In friendship…we think we have chosen our peers. In reality a few years’ difference in the dates of our births, a few more miles between certain houses, the choice of one university instead of another…the accident of a topic being raised or not raised at a first meeting–any of these chances might have kept us apart. But, for a Christian, there are, strictly speaking no chances. A secret master of ceremonies has been at work. Christ, who said to the disciples, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you,” can truly say to every group of Christian friends, “Ye have not chosen one another but I have chosen you for one another.” The friendship is not a reward for our discriminating and good taste in finding one another out. It is the instrument by which God reveals to each of us the beauties of others.” – C. S. Lewis

C. S. Lewis quotes about faith and a higher power

9.) “My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust?”  – C. S. Lewis

10.) “It is when we notice the dirt that God is most present in us; it is the very sign of His presence.”  – C. S. Lewis

C. S. Lewis quotes about faith and a higher power

C. S. Lewis quotes on Faith

19.) “You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.” – C. S. Lewis

C. S. Lewis quotes on Faith

20.) “To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”  – C. S. Lewis

He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of – throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.”  – C. S. Lewis

32.) “We are not necessarily doubting that God will do the best for us; we are wondering how painful the best will turn out to be.”  – C. S. Lewis

33.) “A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell.”  – C. S. Lewis

34.) “Love is not affectionate feeling, but a steady wish for the loved person’s ultimate good as far as it can be obtained.”  – C. S. Lewis

If this sounds too mystical, refer again to the body.
