5 Ways to improve your LinkedIn profile and get better connections

LinkedIn is the social media for employment and business. It’s like a digital resume, but more. It’s also a convenient way for potential employers to check you out before hiring you.

In this regard, LinkedIn is important not only in the business world, but also when making essential contacts. Use it to find and connect with other people in your industry. But before you do, improve your LinkedIn profile to attract like-minded folks like yourself.

Here’s how:

How can you improve your LinkedIn profile?

Here are ways to improve your LinkedIn profile and get better connections

1.) Make sure your LinkedIn profile is completely filled out.

Ways to improve your LinkedIn profile

A lot of people don’t fill out their entire profile on LinkedIn. Although it’s time-consuming, it’s going to be worth it. Don’t forget to go through ALL the fields to edit information and add all relevant jobs (past and present). The site itself is user-friendly; all you need is to take the time to fill-in all necessary data.

2.) Make sure to change your URL to something easy to remember.

Your FULL name would be perfect. When you go to edit your profile, there is an area in the top right corner that says “Edit URL”. Click it and change the end of www.linkedin.com/in/ to add your name.

At first, it can look something like this: Jane-Doe232878749. Try changing it to just: www.linkedin.com/in/janedoe.

This makes it easier to share your LinkedIn profile with friends, co-workers, or potential employers. Just tell them to search for you using your name.

3.) Use your LinkedIn.

Don’t just improve your LinkedIn – use it. Endorse yourself to co-workers, old bosses, friends, etc. You can post interesting things that are related to your field, too. You can also list achievements you’ve accomplished in your job or business.

Remember to check the site from time to time and see who wants to connect with you. Engage with others, and also grow your contact list.

4.) Come up with a good LinkedIn summary.

Your LinkedIn summary is one of the main things people see besides your profile picture. So be sure to highlight your best traits and talents.

My advice would be to draw attention to your professional skills. If you are a business owner for instance, you would want to write things like, “CEO and President of (insert business name) and currently selling high quality products”.

5.) Get people to endorse your skills.

These endorsements are people saying you’re good at what you say you do. For example, someone that has worked for me might endorse me for leadership skills, QuickBooks, sales, management, etc. Whereas folks who went to school with me might endorse me for public speaking, writing, group work, etc.

Don’t forget to do the same for others. It’s really nice to have endorsements, because they let future clients or employers gauge how well you can do certain skills based on people you’ve previously worked with.

Have you heard the saying “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know”? LinkedIn can be a powerful business tool, as long as you use it correctly. When you improve your LinkedIn profile, it’s already a step towards creating better opportunities.

I personally use LinkedIn as a way to link up with old classmates, co-workers, my competition, sales people, as well as other companies in my line of work. You may not see it now, but you want these connections – you never know when you are going to need them.
